Worried to see the dilapidated state of a prestigious prestigious century #General _ General _ Hospital. Learning and healing castle pride should be restored soon

Governor Soundararajan responded to a tweet by Justice for OGH, which shared some photographs as well as a copy of the representation to the DME, expressing concern. “Interested in seeing the dilapidated state of the century old #OsmaniaGeneralHospital. The castle of learning and healing pride should be restored soon,” she tweeted on Tuesday night.

Minister T Harish Rao on Wednesday described the governor’s tweet as unfortunate. He said that the number of outpatients visiting OGH, Gandhi Hospital, Nelofer Hospital and Diet Hospital in the city has decreased significantly due to the success of the ‘Pasti Dawakhanas’. “The governor does not see our achievements and does not appreciate the good work that our medical professionals are doing but he is quick to highlight the problems. The politics here are very clear,” the minister said, as he listed the achievements of his ministry.

Recently, Member of Parliament for Hyderabad Asaduddin Al Owaisi called on the state government for delay in starting construction of a new building in OGH. He asked why the needs of Hyderabad had been neglected despite repeated requests on the part of his party.

This is a flagrant injustice against the people of Hyderabad constituency. It is also a serious disadvantage for doctors, medical students and people of Telangana who come to Hyderabad for treatment. The dilapidated building does not serve the needs of a modern hospital. The restoration of the old building and construction has been estimated at around Rs 560 crores. This amount is peanuts for the government of a “prosperous” country that seems to have money for everything in the world. What is the use of public money if it does not help the poor get life-saving health care? What other reason for the delay in starting work on Osmania? he tweeted.

The health minister said that Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao had visited the hospital in 2015 and announced Rs 200 crore for a new building but some people have taken to court against it. While one group approached the court for protection and preservation of the century-old heritage block, another group sought to demolish all buildings to efficiently build a new hospital building using the 26-acre campus.

The heritage block was vacated in 2020 when rainwater entered the building. Thereafter, the patients were housed in makeshift arrangements in the dilapidated Outpatient Clinic and Quli Qutb Shah Building.

During his visit to the hospital in May last year, Harish Rao affirmed the protection of the heritage block and said that the government will construct the new infrastructure by taking into account the recommendations of the court-appointed expert panel on the structural stability of OGH and the directives of the Telangana High Court. The six-member panel told the court in July 2022 that the heritage block could be repaired and used for non-hospital purposes.

A doctor associated with the new OGH joint association, who requested anonymity, told Indianexpress.com that the government has not yet submitted its decision to the court. The committee informed the government and the court in turn that the building could not be used. During the last hearing on 13 December 2022, the High Commissioner asked the government to decide what it wanted to do. The court requested a comprehensive offer and the government has not made a decision yet.” Adding that many patients are suffering and the government must take a quick decision, “We want a new building for OGH. We cannot continue in this building, the government must act immediately in the interest of the sick.”

An official from the hospital administration admitted that the hospital was overcrowded. “We can put 1,157 beds according to the needs and requirements of the units. There is overcrowding, but this is due to space constraints, not due to an increase in patient flow. If you put 15 beds into the space for 10 beds, there will be overcrowding.” Hospital supervisor Dr. B. Nagender was not available for comment.
