An official said on Wednesday that the Tripura government will release prisoners who have completed two-thirds of their prison terms under the Azadi ka Amrit Mahutsav scheme to celebrate 75 years of independence.
Earlier, five prisoners, including the dreaded criminal Amit Saha, were granted special remission and released from the Central Jail in West Tripura in two stages.
“We have taken up a special remission process for convicted persons who have completed 66 per cent of their jail term and maintained good behaviour. This is done on the instructions of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA),” Apurba Kumar Chakraborty, Director of Prison Affairs Bureau of Prisons Department, told PTI. However, Chakraborty refused to disclose the number of convicts being held in various prisons in the northeastern state, who have completed two-thirds of their jail terms, and whose names have been taken on a special remission period that is scheduled to be completed by August 15.
