Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday made a strong push for a unified civil code, asking how the country could operate with dual laws governing personal matters.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Tuesday that India needs a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) because the country cannot function with a dual system of “separate laws for separate communities”. He was addressing the BJP workers at the booth level in Bhopal (and the interactive session was televised live to 10 party cadres), in a speech that clearly indicated his government’s intention to bring in union contractors.

In response, opposition parties including Congress, DMK and AIMIM accused him of resorting to “divisive politics”.

In simpler terms, UCC means a single law that can be applied to all religious communities in matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, adoption, maintenance, etc.

So, what is the position of the various political parties on this issue? Here’s what News18 has learned so far:

The Legal Committee has initiated a new consultation process on the Uniform Civil Code by soliciting the views of stakeholders, including public and recognized religious organizations. In a public notice issued on June 14, comments were searched online within a month via a link or via email.

Several BJP-ruled states like Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh have already set up their own committees to study the possibility of bringing in the WUC.
