Former NFL quarterback Ryan Mallett, a quarterback from Arkansas, died on Tuesday, June 27 after drowning in Florida.

Ryan was 35 years old and was the head football coach at Whitehall High School in Whitehall, Arkansas. During his NFL career, he played for the New England Patriots, Houston Texans, and Baltimore Ravens, starting eight games and playing in 13 more.

According to Deltaplex News, the quarterback was taken to a Florida hospital from the beach but was pronounced dead on arrival. He was the legendary quarterback for the Arkansas Razorbacks football team, earning two second-team All-SEC honors in 2009 and 2010.

How many years did Ryan Mallett play in the NFL?

The former quarterback had a seven-year stint in the league.

He spent three years with the Patriots from 2011 to 2013, serving as a backup to Tom Brady during this time. In 2014, he moved to the Houston Texans, where he was the spot backup to Ryan Fitzpatrick and became the starter later in the season. In 2015, he lost his starting fight to Brian Hoyer.

Later in 2015, he moved to the Baltimore Ravens, where he stayed until the end of the 2017 season. He played in eight games for the franchise while serving as a backup to Joe Flacco.

The tragic news to hit the NFL comes shortly after Leonard Fournette’s tragedy when his car caught fire while he was driving. A sad day for the league, and especially for the Arkansas fans who had many memorable moments with Mallett as the starting quarterback.
