Timothy Southern, 53, of Litchfield, England, died last year after trying to drink 21 cocktails from a pool bar menu while vacationing at the Royal Decameron Club Caribbean in Jamaica.

A year after his death in his hotel room, Timothy Southern’s family, in a recent inquest (a judicial inquest into death), criticized the response of the hotel staff and nurses to the accident. The family stated that the nurse’s alleged inexperience contributed to Al Janoubi’s death.

A drinking contest at a Jamaican pub ended with the death of Staffordshire native Timothy Southern after he tried to drink 21 cocktails. He managed 12 and after the contest he went back to his hotel room. He was pronounced dead the next morning

In May 2022, Timothy Southern was reportedly on vacation with his sister, children and other relatives, when he met two Canadian women at the pool bar at the Royal Decameron Club Caribbean, in Jamaica. Allegedly, the women were attempting to complete a challenge in which the individual was dared to drink 21 cocktails from the hotel’s pool bar menu.

The southerner, who decided to join the women in the challenge, reportedly drank 12 cocktails before retiring to his hotel room. He later fell ill and died in the room. A Jamaican pathologist declared the cause of death to be “acute gastroenteritis due to alcohol consumption”, which was later confirmed by Staffordshire District Judge Emma Serrano who ruled that the death was alcohol related.

A year after Timothy Southern was announced dead in his hotel room at the Royal Decameron Club Caribbean in Jamaica, his family, in a recent inquest, blamed hotel staff and a nurse for their “disgusting” treatment after they found him unresponsive on the floor.

In the investigation, one of them said that the southerner was already drunk when he met the two women at the hotel pool bar and decided to join them in the seemingly dangerous competition of tasting 21 cocktails from the list. Southerner, overdone in the tavern, then retired to his room, where he was found strangled by a member of the family.

“He was on his back choking. I put him in the recovery position and screamed for an ambulance. He was gurgling. As soon as he was in the recovery position, he vomited. I was screaming his name with no response.”

When the nurse finally made it to the room, a family member reportedly asked if an ambulance had been called, to which the medical staff allegedly replied no. Then the nurse supposedly stood by while Timothy Southern’s condition began to deteriorate.

“I thought she was going to take over. But that wasn’t true. I noticed he was starting to lose his temperature. I checked his pulse and couldn’t find it.”

However, the nurse allegedly confirmed that he had a pulse and continued to do nothing until a family member ordered her to perform CPR.

“I said, ‘Don’t just sit looking at him, start CPR.’ She just gave him chest compressions. Maybe if she knew what she was doing, he might still be here. The service and treatment he received were disgusting.”

In the aftermath of Timothy Souther’s death, the family launched a GoFundMe to raise money to transport his remains from Jamaica to England. The fundraiser, which has raised more than $12,000 since its inception last year, remains open to donations as donations approach the $19,000 target amount.
