Half-centuries by Steve Smith, David Warner and Travis Head on day one helped Australia dominate England in the second Ashes Test

England captain Ben Stokes won the toss in cloudy conditions in the morning and elected to bowl first to gain the advantage. Usman Khawaja (17 from 70 balls) started cautiously as the English ballplayers drove the ball both ways from the start. His opening partner David Warner took the opposite route and was constantly looking for scoring opportunities.

Luck also favored the pair as they were given a lifeline by a couple of catches by the English fielders, much to the frustration of the bowlers. Josh Tong finally cracked the 73-run opening stand at lunch on the 24th by cleaning Usman Khawaja.

The pacer then produced a brilliant income to dislodge David Warner’s bails in the second session to give England a timely finish. Marnus Labuschagne (47) and Steve Smith holed and took the innings forward with a steady 102-run partnership for the third wicket. Ole Robinson put Labuschagne back on the wing in the 55th over to separate the dangerous pair.

Then Travis Head (77 off 73 balls) came in and played a powerful knock and put together a 118-run stand with Steve Smith injecting momentum into the innings. Joe Root pulled things back for England in the final hour by dismissing Head and Cameron Green in the 75th minute. Alex Carey (11*) and Steve Smith (85*) kept Australia unbeaten at stumps on day one.
