On Saturday 24 June, Russian General Sergei Surovkin was last seen by the public. The general’s absence in the media led to speculation that he might be under investigation. According to The Guardian, US intelligence sources believe that Surovikin may have known that Wagner’s mercenary commander Yevgeny Prigozhin was planning an uprising.
US news sources have accused Sorovikin of failing to inform other government officials of a possible rebellion.

The disappearance of General Sergei Surovkin followed the mutiny of the Wagner Group on 23 June. Russian Wagner paramilitaries, led by Yevgeny Prigozhin, captured the city of Rostov-on-Don before attempting to advance towards Moscow.
Deutsche Welle reported that Wagner’s forces were engaged in fighting with Russian military personnel, resulting in between 13 and 20 deaths, including the deaths of two Wagner soldiers.
According to Prigozhin, the revolt was provoked by supposed attacks on its personnel by members of the Russian military forces. But the Russian military denied any involvement.
While speculation has been growing about Sergei Surovikin’s alleged involvement or complicity in the attack, his role has yet to be confirmed.
Sergei Surovikin was the commander of all Russian forces in the Russo-Ukrainian War
As reported by the BBC, Sergey Surovikin is a 56-year-old Russian general who also serves as the commander of the Aerospace Forces. After graduating from the Omsk Higher Military Command School in 1987, he served in several wars, including the Soviet-Afghan War, the Tajik Civil War, the Second Chechen War, and Russia’s military intervention in the Syrian Civil War.
He also served as the commander of all Russian forces in the Russo-Ukraine War from October 2022 to January 2023.
NBC indicated that on January 11, 2023, Sergey Surovkin was replaced by Valery Gerasimov as commander of all Russian forces in Ukraine. On Friday, June 23, he spoke out against the rebellion of the Wagner Group.
Surovikin said:
“We fought with you, took risks, and won together. We are of the same blood, we are warriors. I urge you to stop. The enemy is only waiting for the internal political situation in our country to escalate.”
Lawrence Friedman, professor emeritus of war studies at King’s College London, told Guardian reporters that he did not personally believe General Surovikin was directly involved in the revolution.
However, he thought the general might have had differences with Geramisov, the official he had replaced as head of Russian forces in Ukraine.
Friedman said:
“We know there are divisions about how to fight the war and I suspect Surovikin shares our contempt for Shoigu and Gerasimov.”
Professor Friedman continued:
“It all depends on what you think Prigozhin was trying to achieve. Surovkin may have been eager for a change in the high command but he didn’t want to be involved in a coup – which I don’t think was Prigozhin’s original intention either.”
Professor Friedman added that at the time of the revolution, General Surovkin was most likely in Rostov-on-Don. However, other US military analysts told Sky News that during the rebellion technically Wagner’s forces fought forces loyal to General Surovkin. The whereabouts of the military commander is currently unknown.
