Top seed Carlos Alcaraz will open his quest for a maiden Wimbledon title against France’s Jeremy Chardy.

Alcaraz was one of the better players on the tour despite his late start at the Argentine Open in February. The world number one has lost only four of his 44 matches this season and is trailing leader Daniil Medvedev.

Arguably the most talented young player on the tour, Alcaraz has won five combined tournament titles in 2023. The latest came at Queen’s last week, the Spaniard’s first victory on grass. His other titles of the season came at the Argentine Open, Indian Wells, Barcelona and Madrid (all on clay).

The Spaniard has a record of 4-2 at Wimbledon, with three of those victories coming during his run to the fourth round last year. The other came in his tournament debut in 2021.

Meanwhile, Chardy, ranked 534th, has won just one of his four matches in 2023. The veteran Frenchman is coming off a loss in the Queen’s Qualifier last week (not counting in his win-loss record).

The 36-year-old’s victory of the season came at the Australian Open earlier this year. Chardy has a record of 12-13 at Wimbledon, playing the second round in 2021.

Alcaraz and Chardy are key players, but the similarities in their playing styles end there.

Alcaraz is widely regarded as one of the best young players on the tour and is dedicated to tennis greatness. He has a formidable arsenal, with a big serve, strong hitting both on the wing, elite movement and mentality. Meanwhile, Chardy has more modest weapons.

Despite his young age, Alcaraz is clearly the best among the players in terms of experience and consistency if not grass-court pedigree. The Spaniard is 9-2 on the outside, while Chardy is 29-33.

Given his sensational start to the season, especially on grass, the US Open champion should win.

He chooses: Carlos Alcaraz in straight sets.
