Former India founder Ajit Agarkar is set to become chairman BCCI Senior Selection Committeea position that had been vacant since 17 February when former fast bowler Chetan Sharma resigned after being in the center of a sting operation.
BCCI officials approached Agarkar and promised to increase the annual salary of the chief selector, which is currently ₹1 crore. Then Agarkar decides to apply and is the only big name in the list of applicants. He resigned from his post as assistant coach of IPL team Delhi Capitals on Thursday. Interestingly, in 2020, the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) did not select Agarkar when he applied for the position of selector.
Other members of the selection panel are paid Rs 90,000 each year.
The Indian Express has learned that the BCCI decided to revise the annual salary of the main selector because former players who met the criteria for the job were not willing to apply as other sources of income, such as commentaries and because studio experts were better paid.
Former Mumbai captain Agarkar has played 26 Tests, 191 ODIs and four T20s for India. He was part of the 2007 T20 World Cup winning team which was captained by MS Dhoni.
The current members of the senior selection committee are Subruto Banerjee, Salil Ankola, Sridharan Sharath and Shiv Sundar Das, who took over as interim chairperson following Sharma’s earlier resignation in February.
To apply for the post of selector, a candidate must have played a minimum of 7 Test matches, 30 First Class matches or 10 One Day Internationals and 20 First Class matches. He must also have retired from the game at least 5 years ago. No person who has been a member of any cricket committee (as defined in the Memorandum of Association and the Rules and Regulations of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry) for a period of five years shall be eligible to be a member of the Men’s Selection Committee.
In the sting by Zee News, Sharma was allegedly overheard saying that Indian players take injections to stay fit. It was also alleged that Hardik Pandya, who has been captaining India in T20Is since the T20 World Cup, was a frequent visitor to his home. When the BCCI changed the entire selection panel following India’s semi-final exit from the T20 World Cup in November, Sharma was re-appointed in January this year.
