A day after the lynching of a 41-year-old man from Baldakhal on suspicion of cattle theft, police on Friday arrested two people in connection with the crime.

Nandu Sarkar was allegedly lynched by a group of youths from East Chandrapur village on Eid. While a murder case was registered at East Agartala Police Station shortly after the incident came to light, Officer in Charge (OC) Rana Chatterjee said today that the interrogation of the two arrested people revealed more involvement in the crime.

He added, “We have arrested two people and they will be prosecuted. We are investigating the matter to find out the motive behind the killing. They tied Nandu on suspicion of stealing cattle to an electric pole and assaulted him.”

The arrested duo has been identified as Bhaskar Das and Dibakar Das.

After learning about the accident, the police rushed to the location and rescued the injured Nandu, who was admitted at Ranirbazar Primary Health Centre. He died of his injuries shortly after.

According to the deceased’s wife, Sonali Sarkar, her husband who worked in a meat shop, was beaten by locals in the presence of the police. I filed a complaint about the accident.

While it acknowledged that the alleged lynching involved allegations of cattle rustling, the offender declined to comment further.

“Further investigation is underway. We suspect more people are involved and we will work to arrest them. But we are not revealing more details now for the sake of the investigation.

Earlier on May 7, a 45-year-old man was present He was hanged in Migliband Basti in the Western District of Tripura on charges of stealing a goat.

In the year 2022, a 26-year-old, suspected of cattle theft, is lynched in Sipahigala district.

Similar cases were recorded in two locations in Khwai District in 2021, where three people were assaulted to death.
