The Draft Consolidated Civil Code of Uttarakhand will be sent for printing soon, after which, a copy of the draft is expected to be handed over to the state government.

A five-member panel, chaired by retired High Court Justice Rangana Prakash Desai, will deliver a speech on Friday at a press conference on the Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand. The committee was given the responsibility of drafting the UCC of the said North.

According to a report in Times of India, the committee is now ready with UCC documents after more than 13 months of meetings, consultations, site visits and interactions with experts and members of the public.

In a meeting that spanned more than 10 hours on Wednesday, critical aspects of the UCC were discussed and finalized, TOI Citing officials as saying. The report stated that the draft will be sent for printing soon, after which, a copy of the draft is expected to be handed over to the state government.

Desai had earlier said that the Unified Coordinating Committee being drafted by the panel of experts would promote gender equality and help fight economic, social and religious inequality.

“The committee will make recommendations to promulgate a unified civil code for a range of issues including marriage, divorce succession, guardianship, custody and inheritance with a primary focus on protecting the interests of women, children and people with different abilities. We are focusing more on women, children and people with special abilities,” said Desai. We work for gender equality.”

Modi made a strong push for a “World Council of Churches” on Tuesday, questioning how the country could function with double laws governing personal matters, and accusing the opposition of using the issue to “mislead and provoke” Muslims.

Opposition parties, including Congress, have criticized the prime minister over the issue. In a thinly veiled reference to Modi’s push for the CCC ahead of a series of assembly elections and Lok Sabha 2024 polls, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said his party would not allow the BJP to divert attention from public issues.

Notably, in the BJP’s 2019 election manifesto, the party promised to implement UCC if it came to power.

Desai was appointed as the chairperson of the Boundary Commission of India on 13 March 2020. She was also one of the judges who ruled on the condition of her voting power.
