A day after Union Home Minister Amit Shah accused the Congress government of Rajasthan of playing a vote bank policy by citing Udaipur-based tailor Kanhaiya Lal, former Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje visited the home of an eyewitness in the case.
On Saturday, Raji visited the home of Rajkumar Sharma, the witness to Lal’s murder. Sharma is currently bedridden after suffering a brain haemorrhage.
Kanhaiya Lal was killed on June 28 last year by two assailants who accused him of insulting Islam by sharing remarks made by suspended BJP leader Nupur Sharma on the Prophet.
The two defendants, Muhammad Riad Attari and Muhammad Jahous, were arrested on the same day. Later, the National Intelligence Agency, which took over the case from the Rajasthan Police, said that the killing was planned in Pakistan and also filed charge sheets against 11 people, including two Pakistani nationals.
“I wanted to come here and see the situation for myself, what relief the government has provided and his condition now,” Raje told reporters in Udaipur on Saturday.
Raji added that she would help the family in case of any need including Sharma’s children’s marriage.
On Friday, while addressing a public meeting in Udaipur, Shah launched a scathing attack on Prime Minister Ashok Jehlot, saying that had his government created special courts, Lal’s killers would have been hanged by now.
Jahlot responded to Shah, describing the Federal Minister of Interior’s statements as “irresponsible” and accusing him of “lying”.
