England Under-21s and Portugal Under-21s will meet at the Ramaz-Shengelia stadium on Sunday (2 July) for a place in the semi-finals of the UEFA European Under-21 Championship 2023.
England qualified for the last eight as Group C winners, and took the most points from three matches by winning all of their matches 2–0. Portugal finished as runners-up in Group A to book a place in the quarter-finals.
Speranca started the final round of matches bottom of their group, but a dramatic 2-1 win over Belgium pushed them into second place. All three goals came in the second half, with Joao Neves opening the scoring in the 56th minute, while Jorbe Vertisen equalized for the Belgians nine minutes later. Thiago Dantas scored a penalty in the 89th minute to help the Iberian side advance.
Meanwhile, England overcame defending champions Germany with a routine 2-0 victory. Cameron Archer and Harvey Elliott scored first half goals to inspire the young Lions to victory.
The winner of this encounter will face either Israel or host nation Georgia in the semi-finals.
England were not strong favorites to participate in this tournament, but their impressive start saw them lead the list of favourites. Portugal started slowly but are back in the thick of things and will now imagine their chances of going one step better than second place two years ago.
The Portuguese have had the advantage in recent matches between the two sides. But England’s dominance in this tournament would have instilled confidence in Lee Carsley’s side. We backed the Young Lions to a hard-fought win with goals at both ends.
