Everton have reportedly held talks with Manchester United goalkeeper Tom Heaton.
According to Football Insider, the Toffees are among several clubs linked with making a move to sign Heaton this summer. Luton Town, who gained promotion ahead of the 2023-24 Premier League season, is also keen to sign the veteran goalkeeper.
However, the report adds that Manchester United are not considering an exit for Heaton amid uncertainty over the goalkeeper’s position. David De Gea’s contract expired on Friday (30 June). United issued a squad update on the same day that they said discussions with De Gea over a new deal were continuing.
The Spanish player’s unresolved contract situation appears to have left Heaton’s future at Old Trafford in doubt. The 37-year-old Englishman still has a year left to sign the contract he signed in the summer of 2021, and he participated in only three matches in the two seasons he spent with the Red Devils.
The aforementioned report adds that Everton’s pursuit of Heaton comes after the contract of second goalkeeper Asmir Begovic expired. Jordan Pickford remains No. 1 at the moment and is contracted to the Toffees until 2027, but has been linked to a few clubs in previous transfer spells.
Meanwhile, Luton are looking to make Heaton their number one. The Hatters are said to want experience in their first season in the Premier League. Ethan Horvath was the team’s starting goalkeeper last season and kept 19 clean sheets in 44 tournament appearances, conceding just 37 times. However, the 25-year-old has returned to Nottingham Forest after his season-long loan expired.
Meanwhile, Heaton made 116 Premier League appearances for Burnley and Aston Villa, keeping 29 clean sheets and conceding 167 goals.
Manchester United are in talks with Andre Onana amid uncertainty over David De Gea
Tom Heaton’s future at Old Trafford could hinge on the club’s talks with Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana.
Inter CEO Giuseppe Marotta recently confirmed that the Nerazzurri are waiting to receive an offer from Manchester United for Onana. Marotta said (as quoted by transport expert Fabrizio Romano on Twitter):
“Manchester United has confirmed to us that they are interested in Andr eOnana. We are waiting for an official proposal in the coming days, then we will decide how to act after that.”
If Manchester United sign Onana, he could potentially become their starting goalkeeper, which could lead to the departure of David De Gea.
This, in turn, could have ramifications for Tom Heaton’s future, as Erik ten Hag may continue to build on his experience and retain him as a back-up goalkeeper. Alternately, the Red Devils could sell Heaton and sign a younger trustee as Onana’s replacement.
