This development comes after the Gujarat High Court rejected Setalvad’s petition and ordered her to surrender immediately

The Supreme Court agreed to hold an urgent hearing on Saturday on the petition filed by activist Teesta Setalvad challenging the Gujarat High Court’s orders which denied her bail application in a case of fabricating evidence to implicate innocent people in the post-Godhra riots of 2002.

This development comes hours after the Gujarat High Court rejected Setalvad’s petition and ordered her to surrender immediately. The court noted that she had made attempts to shake up a democratically elected government, tarnished the image of then and current Prime Minister Narendra Modi and tried to send him to jail.

Currently out on provisional bail, the Court of Justice ordered Nirzar Desai Setalvad to surrender immediately and denied her lawyer’s request to give her 30 days to surrender.

In June last year, former Director General of Gujarat Police R.P. Srikumar and former IPS officer Sanjeev Bhatt, were arrested in connection with a case registered by the Ahmedabad Crime Branch Police. The case alleged fabrication of evidence to falsely implicate innocent individuals in the post-Godhra riot cases.

On September 2, 2022, Setalvad was granted provisional bail by the Supreme Court.
