Bihar’s education minister and elder brother of AKP leader Chandra Shekhar, Ram Chandra Prasad Yadav, has joined the BJP, criticizing the party led by Lalu Prasad and praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“The RJD has done precious little for marginalized sectors of society, especially the scheduled castes. It has strayed from its primary goals of social justice. On the other hand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been working for the cause of all sectors of society.
Ram Chandra, who had recently retired as a professor from Delhi University College, also dismissed Chandra Shekhar’s remarks on Ramcharitmanas as “erroneous”. In January this year, Bihar’s education minister sparked a row when he called the Tulsidas epic “divisive”.
While Chandra Shekhar declined to comment on his brother’s move, RJD spokesperson Subodh Kumar Mehta said: Indian Express: “A person can join any political group or party in a democracy. Just because a person is the brother of our fellow party member and minister does not mean that he will harm us. The AKP is a well-established party and is not affected by such things.”
However, another AKP leader conceded that the BJP had started its march too early in the run-up to the 2025 AGM even if Chandra Shekhar did not face a major electoral threat with his brother joining the BJP. “But we wonder why Chandra Shekhar did not try to dissuade his brother from joining the BJP,” he said.
BJP’s OBC Morcha national general secretary and state party spokesperson Nikhil Anand said, “The way Chandra Shekhar’s brother slammed his remarks (on Ramcharitmanas) and joined the BJP proves that Chandra Shekhar has no detainee even in his family.” He urged youth and students to go down the road in protest of his capricious education policies including the recent removal of the residence (Bihar) clause from the conditions for hiring teachers.”
BJP sources said that Chandra Shekhar’s brother joining the Saffron Party would give him an “advantage” for two reasons. Firstly, Chandrasekhar, who has been speaking against some parts of the Ramcharitmanas, will be somewhat wary of speaking anything inviting criticism from his brother. Secondly, the BJP may play a mind game with the RJD by pitting one brother against the other in Madhipura in General Assembly polls for 2025,” said a party source.
The BJP never won the Madhipura constituency which Yadav dominates on his strength. Prior to 2010, the seat was won by JD (U) as part of the NDA. Chandra Shekhar has since won it on the RJD ticket for three consecutive times.
