The three Pune residents were among the 25 passengers killed when a private bus had an accident and caught fire in the early hours of the day on Samruddhi Highway in Sindkhedraja.
A 52-year-old teacher, who was returning after dropping off his son who was attending a law course in Nagpur, was killed along with his wife and daughter in the Boldana bus tragedy on Saturday.
Their relatives said the three Pune residents were among the 25 passengers killed when a private bus had an accident and caught fire in the early hours of the day on Samruddhi Highway in Sindkhedraja, about 400 km from here.
Kaliyas Gangawan, a school English teacher, his wife Kanchan and their daughter Rutuja were returning to their native village Nirgudsar in Ambegaon Tehsil here after dropping off their son Aditya, who has been accepted for a law course in Nagpur, he said.
“The four of us went to Nagpur on Wednesday. We came to know about the incident at 5:30 am. One of our relatives, a policeman, informed me that the charred bodies of the three were found hugging each other,” said Rupesh Gangawan, Kailas’ cousin.
Kailas said he and his relatives were in Buldana for further formalities to claim the bodies. “The family is originally from Shirur Tehsil in Pune. They settled in Nergudsar after Kailas got a teaching job.”
Kanchan Gangawan’s brother, Amar Kali, said the bodies of the bus victims were charred beyond recognition and that DNA tests should be carried out to identify them.
Arun Gord, a teacher and neighbor to Kailas, said the latter had been teaching at the Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru School in Nirgudsar since 1996 and also worked as a principal with the Maharashtra State Board of Class 12 for a decade.
“We’ve been neighbors ever since. It’s a terrible tragedy. Kailas was a gentleman and fluent in English. Rutuja was in her third year of BHMS in Pune, Aditya had recently passed class 12 and gained admission in a law course in Nagpur.”
Jord said Kailas was a kind-hearted man who raised his niece and nephew after their parents died.
“Years ago, he maintained that his nephew and niece did not feel the pain of losing their parents at such a young age. Unfortunately, his son Aditya is now an orphan.”
