Haas F1 chief of strategy Mike Caulfield recently stated that Mick Schumacher is “one of the best” drivers he has worked with in F1 despite the German’s harsh dismissal by the team last year.
Haas decided not to continue with Schumacher after a series of costly accidents last season, to be replaced by the experienced Nico Hulkenberg. However, the young German has shown signs of improvement in 2022 and put in some excellent performances.
Cofield wrote on Twitter:
“One of the best demeanor and commitment drivers I’ve ever worked with. I’ve seen a lot of people say he’s only there because of his name, but in fact, because of his name, the demands are so much more than that. I hope he gets a shot at a decent car sometime.” .
he added:
“Do you realize that this season’s car that Hulk drives is a completely different car than what Mick drove last season? They’ve never driven the same car, so how do you make that comparison, I’m not sure. Also, the Hulk’s racing speed was pretty awful. My feeling is that the Hulk He’ll outpace (Mick), but Mick will be better at racing.”
Mercedes team principal praises Mick Schumacher
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff was deeply impressed by Mick Schumacher’s commitment and hard work as a reserve driver and believes the sport is losing his skills.
Speaking to Sky Sports recently, Wolff said:
“I think teams are missing out, to be honest. I think it got burned last year. You need to create and provide a different environment and framework for each driver, we’re all different people. Whoever gets it is a very good pilot. I’m not even sure we can make it easier ( seat), because every time we speak harshly, someone feels like saying something negative.”
He completed:
“Where I can speak loudly and praise Mick, that’s what I do. But in the end, every team is the authority to decide on their drivers and I hold that in high esteem. Our contracts with teams have never been ‘You have to take our little driver,’ You have to take our spare driver.” Because when I was at Williams, I also wanted to have my own choice.”
