A retired Police Officer (SHO) has been booked in a corruption case and under some other charges by Sultanpur Lodhi Police Station in Kapurtala.

As per the details, Retired SHO of Sultanpur Lodi Sarabjit Singh allegedly tampered with some documents to save a man who was accused of cheating a person of Rs 10,000.

Investigators said that Sarabjit and Palwinder Singh – the man who allegedly stole 10,000 rupees – had been booked.

The police said that according to the details available to them, Balwinder was presently living in the United States of America, while Sarabjit was not traced or arrested.

A police officer said that a cheating case, involving a sum of 10 lakh rupees, was registered in 2018 against Balwinder Singh, a resident of Jadarbandi, and Usman bin Abdullah alias Ghani, a resident of Hyderabad, under the Punjab Travel Professionals Regulation Act. 2014, based on a complaint filed by Hakam Singh of Shah Jahanpur village in Kapurtala.

Hakam claimed to have paid 10 lakh rupees to Balwinder, who had promised to send his son abroad. But Balwinder did not send Ibn Hakam abroad, nor did he return the money.

According to the details, the duo were booked under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act and Sections 218 (framing a public servant of an incorrect record or writing with intent to save a person from punishment or property from forfeiture), and 120(b) (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC.

SSP in Kapurthala said that he had assigned Sultanpur Lodhi DSP Babandeep Singh to investigate the case and find out how Balwinder managed to get a clean sheet in the case even though he cheated a man of Rs 10 lakh.
