Michael Vaughan criticized England’s Bazball approach after the hosts totaled for 325 in response to Australia’s first innings total of 416 on day three in the Second Ashes Test at Lord’s on Friday, 30 June.

For starters, Mitchell Stark dismissed England captain Ben Stokes (17), Joe Root (10) and Harry Brook (50) from short deliveries.

Meanwhile, Jonny Bairstow (16), Ollie Pope (42) and Ben Duquette (98) all bowled their wickets despite their steady starts.

The 48-year-old told the BBC Test Match Special:

“Obviously England likes to lose. Seeing a player play a shot like that, it’s not good enough at that level. That’s stupid England cricket. I’m afraid they have forgotten the art of enjoying not easy periods of the match.”

The former England captain added:

“Test cricket is a test and in that test sometimes you have to absorb the pressure. They’ve given a talented wicket to Australia, who don’t have their bowler (Nathan Lyon).”

It should be noted that England only added 47 runs to their overnight score of 278/4 as wickets fell like a pack of cards in the first session of Day 3.

What a session from Australia – they picked 6/47 in this session to beat England for just 325.

“Sensitive to the short ball” – Nasser Hussain points out England’s weakness in the ashes

Nasir Hussain identified the short-ball problems for the England batsman during the second Ashes Test. The former England captain said the home side had forgotten the art of defending in the baseball era. The 55-year-old told Channel Nine:

“There is a time to attack and a time to defend. What you don’t want to do early in a five-game series is show the opponent that you are vulnerable to the short ball.”

Kevin Pietersen also questioned the dismissal of Harry Brook while holed up against Australian captain Pat Cummins after completing his half-century. The 43-year-old told Sky Sports:

“I don’t think Harry Brook has shown anyone that he plays the short ball very well, so unfortunately for him the next three Test matches won’t be interesting. He made 91 runs for Australia. You wouldn’t have thought that he would come to the ground this morning.”

Australia finished on 4 on 130/2 with Usman Khawaja and Steve Smith at the crease. The visitors extended their lead to 221 runs.
