In a case of suspected honor killing, a 22-year-old woman was shot dead in Alipur Atrina village in Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh state, on Wednesday night, two years after she married a man belonging to a lower caste against the wishes of her family.

Police said the woman was killed by her brothers who fled and raids are underway to arrest them. Officials said five people, including four members of her family, were arrested during raids to detain others.

The victim’s husband filed an FIR in this regard at Bodana Police Station against 13 persons, including her four brothers, their wives and an unmarried brother. It was learned that the rest of the defendants are the neighbors of the family.

Police said Farhana, who belongs to the Pathan caste, married Shahid, 28, of the Faqir caste (another backward caste), at the Muzaffarnagar Court in August 2021. Police said the couple came to their village on June 7. Around 6 p.m. on Wednesday, when Farhana was returning home from Saloon, two assailants shot her dead near the triple-junction near the village post office, they said. She was hit on the head and was pronounced dead in the hospital.

“It is a case of honor killing as her family members cannot afford to marry their daughter to a lower-caste man. The body of the victim has been handed over to her family,” Sharma added.
