West Bengal Governor C.
Five people were wounded in the clashes that took place on Saturday night.
The governor spoke with doctors and inquired about the condition of the injured. An official said he also met with family members of the victims and reassured them of all possible help.
Later, the Governor spoke with the District Magistrate and Police Chief of Cooch Behar and ordered them to maintain law and order and to catch the culprits. “He also sent instructions to the state election commissioner Rajiva Sinha,” said an official in Raj Bhavan, adding that the governor monitored the situation throughout the night from the Cooch Behar Circuit House, where he is staying.
The Governor is currently visiting several districts in North Bengal to assess the law and order situation ahead of the July 8 elections in the panchayat. A few days ago, Bose called the law and order situation in the state “very disturbing”, and said he wanted to be a “zero governor” because he wanted to meet those affected by political violence.
Raj Bhavan also opened a “Peace House” and a 24 x 7 phone number to handle complaints of violence and intimidation. These matters shall be dealt with immediately with the State Election Commission or the Chief Secretary.
