The Boston Red Sox lost superstar Garrett Whitlock after just one inning on Sunday. He had one hit and hit a home run before having to leave with what was described as a tight elbow. This is usually a bad sign for an MLB pitcher, especially with Tommy John surgeries on the rise.
He will have tests to determine his severity and the team will certainly hope for the best, but it doesn’t look good. Avid Red Sox fan and MLB podcaster Jared Carrabis has found himself deeply frustrated with a recent injury.

The Boston Red Sox currently sit last in the AL East, but are still in the playoffs with a 42-42 record at this point. However, injuries, especially in the field staff, were hard to overcome.
Chris Sale, Julie Rodriguez, Richard Blair, Corey Kluber, Tanner Hawk and John Schreiber are all on the injured list, with Whitlock likely to join them. Even Masataka Yoshida, Trevor Storey and Rhys McGuire are getting hurt by the attack at the moment.
Whitlock hasn’t quite performed like an ace this season, but a healthy arm, one that has performed well in the past, is a vital asset to a team like the Red Sox.

Getting out early is never good for a pitcher, especially after one inning. And hearing the words “elbow tight” is never good. This usually belies something serious.
The team will definitely run tests as soon as possible and work out exactly what’s going on with the pitcher, but it certainly doesn’t look bright. An elbow strain can tear the UCL and require Tommy John surgery, which will cost him this season and part of next year if that’s the diagnosis.
