The woman’s husband said she died on Friday and kept the body in the fridge at home while he waited for their son to return from Mumbai for her funeral, he said.
On Sunday, the police recovered the body of a woman who was kept in a mortuary refrigerator at her home in Rewa district, Madhya Pradesh state, after her brother claimed in a complaint that she was killed by her husband, while the latter claimed that she died of jaundice. He said.
The woman’s husband said she died on Friday and kept the body in the fridge at home while he waited for their son to return from Mumbai for her funeral, he said.
The police sent the woman’s body for an autopsy to find out the cause of her death.
“We recovered the body of a 40-year-old woman, identified as Sumitri, after her brother Abhay Tiwari complained to us that his brother-in-law had killed her in a silent manner,” said Inspector of Kotwali City Police, Vijay Singh told PTI.
“However, the deceased woman’s husband, Bharat Mishra, said he had kept her body in a freezer in his home until their son came home from Mumbai for the funeral,” he said.
The police official said they sent her body for an autopsy to ascertain the cause of her death.
He added, “Her husband told us that she was suffering from jaundice and died of it on June 30.”
Tiwari claimed in his complaint that neither his son-in-law Mishra nor his family informed him or his relatives of his sister’s death, and he learned about it this morning, the inspector said.
The complainant alleged that Mishra used to beat his sister and that she might have died as a result.
“We have acknowledged the complaint and are awaiting the autopsy report to act accordingly,” Singh said.
