Union Minister for Home Affairs and Cooperation Amit Shah on Sunday effectively launched the ‘Akshar River Cruise’ on the Sabarmati River.
Developed by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited, the cruise is the first passenger catamaran built in the country under Make in India at a cost of Rs 15 crore with twin engines in which 165 passengers can travel safely for one-and-a-half hours.
Shah said the cruise is a gift from the Gujarat government and AMC to the citizens of Ahmedabad.
He added that the river frontage was the brainchild of Prime Minister Narendra Modi when he was Chief Minister of Gujarat. Riverfront is not only popular in Ahmedabad, but across India and the world, Shah said, and has emerged as a major hub for tourism.
“Not only has the water level risen due to the riverfront, but it has also emerged as a hub for many social and cultural activities for everyone including the elderly, children and youth. This luxury river cruise will be a new attraction for all the citizens of Ahmedabad. This cruise is developed under a partnership between public and private sectors by Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation and Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited.This cruise is the first passenger catamaran built in India under Make in India at a cost of Rs 15 crore with two engines and can travel safely for one and a half hours, Shah said in his speech .
He added that the cruise was designed keeping in mind the comfort of citizens and was equipped with 180 safety and fire safety vests and an emergency rescue boat. “Because of several initiatives taken by Narendra Modi in the field of tourism, Gujarat has figured prominently on the tourism map of the country. With the investment of crores of rupees, an ecosystem of 1 lakh tourists coming to Gujarat has been developed. Good roads have also been created to connect all the pilgrims. Roads linking airports with tourist places have also been constructed to provide facilities for tourists.He said Modi has given a new dimension to tourism in Gujarat by taking various initiatives.
