A TMC worker, 52-year-old Giyarul Malla, was shot dead in Phulmalancha district of Basanti in South 24 Parganas district late Saturday night while returning home, a police officer said.
Police said a Trinamool Congress worker was killed and several other members of the ruling party and opposition groups were injured in clashes in West Bengal state bound for Panchayat.

Meanwhile, at least 10 people were injured in clashes between supporters of the Iraqi Communist Party (ICP) and Internal Security Forces on one side and supporters of the Transitional Military Council on the other in Pashim Medinipur district on Sunday, police said.
The incident took place in Krishnapur district of Chandrakona in the morning after members of the Transitional Military Council attempted to erect party flags, and met resistance from opposition activists.
Another police officer said that the ten injured, who belong to the two camps, were transferred to hospitals where they are undergoing treatment, adding that their condition is stable.
He added that a large contingent of the police team was deployed immediately. The police did not mention the number of detainees or those arrested after the clashes.
In another incident, Ibrahim Malla, the candidate of the Transitional Military Council in Chaltapriya Gram Panchayat, was seriously injured when he was crushed and stabbed, allegedly by ISF activists, while returning to his home in Bhangar district of South 24 Parganas on Sunday night after launching his election campaign. , the police said.
TMC leader Sokat Mulla alleged that Bhangar MLA Naushad Siddique was behind the attack because he wanted to unleash a “reign of terror” in the region.
However, Al-Siddiq denied the charge, while counter-claiming that the TMC was threatening and intimidating ISF workers in the villages. “The villagers are revolting against the atrocities and the ‘culture of bombs’ committed by the Transitional Military Council and this is not liked by the gang that Shaukat Mulla is sponsoring.
The ISF believes in peaceful movement of people and not in violence.” He added that about 5.67 crore people are eligible to cast their ballots in the three-caste panchayat elections in the state on July 8 for about 74,000 seats in Zilla Paris, Samiti panchayat and Gram panchayat.
