England batter Jonny Bairstow ended up being dismissed in embarrassing fashion during the fifth day of the ongoing Ashes 2023 Test at Lord’s on Sunday.
Bairstow ducked in a short cross from Cameron Green and the ball went to goalkeeper Alex Carey. The keeper immediately collected the ball and bowled underarm at the stumps. Bairstow, unaware of this, began walking towards his non-striker and suddenly turned at the sound of the ball hitting the woods.
The Australian players began to celebrate as they called for a run out. The third official ruled Jonny Bairstow off after considering a replay. The official felt that the dismissal was strictly within the laws of the game because the ball was not dead.
Bairstow had to back off in disbelief and seemed to have some words with the Australians on the way back. Here’s a video of the parcel:
After Jonny Bairstow was sent off, it looked like Australia could take a 2-0 lead in the series. However, the dismissal seemed to have awakened England captain Ben Stokes, as he unleashed some fine shots.
Stokes broke boundaries and three sixes hit Cameron Green to bring up an incredible hundred. England went to lunch on the fifth day with 243/6 on the board and needing another 128 runs for a stunning win.
No need to remind Australia of the 2019 Ashes test at Headingley when Stokes pulled off a stunning win from a similar situation. They will need to be in their A game for the after lunch session and try to get the England captaincy as soon as possible. Meanwhile, the stewards believe Stokes can pull off another miracle.
