The right arm of a one-and-a-half-year-old boy has been amputated due to alleged medical negligence by doctors at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) in Chennai.

The baby, who hails from the city of Ramanathapuram, was born prematurely weighing only 1.5kg and was diagnosed with multiple health complications, including hydrocephalus, a neurological disorder that results in abnormal accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain. The boy underwent surgery to drain excess fluid last year and has been under regular medical care since then.

However, a complication arose last week when the shunt was used to drain the prominent fluid through the anus. The infant was taken to RGGGH in Chennai for an emergency procedure to avoid fluid buildup.

Four days after the surgery, when the child was being given medications via intravenous (IV) therapy, complications arose when his fingers began to turn red. His entire wrist turned dark red, an indication of an acute stroke attack. But the mother, Aziza Abd, said that the complications were due to the utter negligence of the doctors at King Faisal Specialist Hospital. She said she reported the problem on Thursday and that there was no doctor.

On Friday, she said, the doctor gave an ointment and that the doctors came and finally diagnosed the problem only on Saturday, which led to the amputation. There were no doctors that night. By the time the doctor on duty arrived to check my child’s health, his entire arm, which he had been actively using until the day before, had gone numb.

She said, “If the nurses or doctors had responded after I told them, my son wouldn’t have lost his arm.”

The baby’s arm was diagnosed with gangrene after examination, and the hospital’s medical team quickly recommended amputation. Soon, the baby was taken to the Government Institute of Child Health, Egmore, for the surgery. The baby is currently under constant supervision by a team of experts in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at ICH.

Health Minister Ma Subramanian said necessary action would be taken if the negligence was confirmed.
