Islamabad (Pakistan): Chinese billionaire and co-founder of Ali Baba Jack Ma’s group caused a stir among observers with his unexpected visit to Pakistan, according to the Express Tribune.
The Express Tribune is a daily English language newspaper based in Pakistan.
Former Chairman of the Board of Investment (BOI), Muhammad Azfar Ahsan, confirmed the visit to The Express Tribune, stating that Ma arrived in Lahore on June 29 and stayed for 23 hours.
During the visit, Jack Ma avoided interacting with government officials and the media. He stayed in private and departed on June 30 in a private jet registered as VP-CMA, owned by Jet Aviation.
According to The Express Tribune, while the purpose of Ma’s visit remains secret at this stage, there is hope that it will yield positive results for Pakistan in the coming days, according to Ahsan.
Ma was accompanied by a delegation of seven businessmen consisting of five Chinese, a Danish and an American citizen. They arrived in Pakistan from Nepal via a chartered flight from Hong Kong’s Business Aviation Sector.
There have been various speculations on social media about Ma and his team’s exploration Job opportunities in PakistanIncluding visits to commercial centers and meetings with senior businessmen and officials from various chambers of commerce. However, there has been no confirmation regarding any specific business deals or meetings.
Ahsan explained in a tweet that Ma’s visit was for personal purposes only. Interestingly, he said, not even the Chinese embassy was aware of the details of Ma’s visit and involvement in the country.
Speaking to the Express Tribune, P@SHA President Zohaib Khan said, “Although it was a personal visit, it helped boost Pakistan’s reputation from a tourism point of view.” Khan expressed the view that the Pakistani authorities should have taken the opportunity to arrange a meeting with Ma and gain insights from his veteran experience in the IT world. He said that even a statement on the IT sector in Pakistan would have a huge impact.
