About a hundred sailors from across the country will be seen at play at the Hyderabad Sailing Week, which is set to kick off on Tuesday at the city’s famous Hosensagar Lake.

The 37th edition of the event is also accredited as the Yachting Association of India (YAI) national ranking event, where sailors’ performance will earn points for selection into the national team for upcoming national and international sailing events.

Speaking to reporters, Major General Ajay Sharma, Deputy Commodore, Electronics and Mechanical Sailing Society (EME SA) and Vice-Commander of the Millary College of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering (MCEME), said this year’s event is going to be exhilarating since sailors don’t participate for fun.

“Whatever they rank and whatever way they perform, it will contribute to their national ranking. This will be a feeder event for their selection in the Asian Games.

On Tuesday, Lieutenant General JS Sedana, Commander MCEME, Commanding Corps Colonel EME, Commodore EME Sailing Association, and Vice President of the Indian Laser Class Association will start the competition.

The sporting event is being organized by EME Sailing Club based in Secunderabad and Laser Class Society of India. Under three classes – ILCA 4, ILCA 6, and ILCA 7, up to 12 races are scheduled under each.

After the practice races on July 4, sailing competitions will take place from July 5-8. The closing ceremony and awards ceremony will be held on July 9. Governor of Telangana Tamilisai Sounderarajan will participate in the closing ceremony of the event.

Hyderabad is a popular destination for sailing and the EME Sailing Club has been organizing events since 1964. Wind conditions in July and August are most favorable in Hussainsagar Lake to hone sailors’ boat handling skills and understanding of wind shifts.
