The Jammu and Kashmir administration has proposed two metro lines for the region – one each in the cities of Srinagar and Jammu. “The proposal has been sent to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs for ministerial consultation,” J&K Deputy Governor Manoj Sinha told The Indian Express.
J&K does not currently have a metro line, and if cleared, it will be the first in the region and is expected to boost the public transportation system in both cities.
“Since a metro line like Delhi would not be possible for J&K, MetroLite was proposed. I think there has been some deliberation on whether MetroNeo should be approved for Srinagar and Jammu, but I think MetroLite is what we are looking for, for now,” Sinha said. .
Under the proposal, J&K management proposed a 25 km line at Srinagar and a 23 km line at Jammu.
According to the written response given by the Lok Sabha Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs in December 2021, Srinagar and Jammu were among the five cities the respective governments sought financial assistance from the Centre.
“MetroLite” is an urban light rail transportation system with a lower capacity and a much lower cost. In addition to the lower capital cost, the cost of operating and maintaining Metrolite will also be lower, making the system more viable, according to the ministry.
The lower capital cost of these new modes of transportation, MetroLite and MetroNeo, versus the higher-capacity metro rail, is due to the lighter civil structure, less axle load, smaller stations, lower power electrical equipment, lower operation and maintenance cost, etc. The systems can also be used as a conventional rail feed system.
