Eyewitnesses said that the crack appears to have been created by monsoon rains

A 6-foot-deep hole has appeared in a field at Joshimath in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand amid monsoon rains, raising fresh concerns. Eyewitnesses said that the crack appears to have been created by monsoon rains.

“I discovered a hole at least 6 feet deep in a small field near my house. It appears to have been developed by monsoon rains.” Hindustan Times According to him.

The eyewitness added that the residents feared more damage to the buildings in the town due to the rain. He added that cracks in already damaged homes are slowly expanding.

Earlier this year in January, hundreds of families were moved to safer locations after several homes in the city sustained serious cracks.

according to PTI As per the report, cracks appeared on the road connecting Narasingh Temple in Joshimath and Badrinath district which was hit by subsidence in February 2023 as well. The road is used to transport pilgrims from Joshimath to Badrinath during the yatra season.

Cracks in walls and buildings in Joshimath were first reported in 2021, as Chamoli has suffered frequent landslides and floods. According to reports, the expert panel of the Uttarakhand government, on inspection in 2022, found several pockets of Joshimath to be “flooding”.

As many as 868 buildings have developed cracks in Joshimath and 181 have been declared unsafe so far.

A group of residents led by Joshimath Bachao Sangharsh Samiti recently met Chamoli district magistrate Himanshu Khurana at the district headquarters in Gopeshwar and discussed potential threats to the city during the monsoons.

Earlier, Joshimath Bachao Sangarsh Samiti had withdrawn their 107-day sit-in protest after Prime Minister Pushkar Singh Dami assured them to take concrete action on the 11-point charter of demands.

according to PTI In the report, Samiti’s demands include streamlining the compensation process for those affected and making the report of a joint study conducted by various scientific institutions on the Joshimath land subsidence crisis available to the public.
