Manchester United are said to be poised to enter the race to sign Barcelona target and Fiorentina midfielder Sofiane Amrabat.

The defensive midfielder was a key component of Walid Regragui’s Moroccan team that finished fourth in the Qatar 2022 World Cup. He is also one of the most important players for Fiorentina, having made 107 appearances in the past three seasons.

Amrabat looks set to leave La Viola this summer for a new project. According to journalist Sarah Meany (h/t Fichajes.net), Manchester United have thrown their name in the hat for the 26-year-old’s services.

Atletico Madrid and Barcelona are believed to have an interest in Amrabat, whose contract expires in 2024. Fiorentina have put €30m on him, and it remains to be seen if cash-strapped Barcelona are open to meeting that amount.

They were forced to come up with a feasibility plan this summer to prove their financial health to La Liga. According to Gerard Romero (Barcelona goalkeeper Pogranes), the plan has been approved by the league, which means that Barcelona can start managing its finances for the sake of next season.

However, this does not mean that they can sign any player. Only time will tell if they can dedicate enough to land Amrabat ahead of Atletico Madrid and Manchester United.

The Manchester United target wants to play in Spain amid Barcelona’s interest

Soufiane Amrabat’s brother, Noureddine Amrabat, said in a recent interview that the Fiorentina midfielder wants to play at the top level.

Mocking West Ham United’s stated interest in his brother, Nordin told ESPN (h/t MoroccoWorldNews):

“Sofiane to West Ham? No, he wants to climb to the top, and his desire is to play in Spain. In Barcelona, he is at the top of the list, but you know Barcelona’s financial situation.”

Soufiane Amrabat himself spoke of his admiration for Diego Simeone’s playing style at Atletico Madrid. The defensive midfielder said in January (via Marca):

“What Simeone does, what he achieves… He coached Atlético Madrid for many years. I like his style of play. The players on his team are physically strong and aggressive. I like to play this way.”

The Fiorentina midfielder, who is wanted by Manchester United, has not ruled out a move to the Premier League either. Ahead of his UEFA Europa Conference League side’s final loss to West Ham United, he said (h/t Daily Mail):

“Of course, the Premier League is a great league, and it’s one of the strongest leagues in the world. Of course, in England the intensity was very high, so I think it could suit me.”

The Hammers beat La Viola 2-1 in the final.
