Despite Prime Minister K Chandrashekar Rao’s desire to build a twin tower for the hospital in 2015, two groups approached the Supreme Court. While one group sought to protect and preserve the century-old heritage building, the other group sought to demolish all structures to efficiently build a new hospital building using the 26-acre campus. The case has remained in court ever since. In 2020, the heritage block was vacated after rainwater and sewage entered the building during heavy rain. The patients have been housed in temporary alternative arrangements ever since.
Due to inadequate infrastructure and the subsequent overcrowding of hospital wards, the OGH Joint Partnership Committee is calling for urgent action. A protest march was scheduled from Osmaniye General Hospital in Afzalgunj to Osmaniye Medical College in Koti on Monday afternoon. However, the doctors decided to stop all protests for a week after confirmation by the Minister of Health.

Dr. Srikanth, Joint Secretary of Osmania Junior Doctors Association (JuDA), said the minister had responded to all their concerns. The minister said he will hold a meeting with representatives of the local public on Monday evening and will submit an affidavit in court within a week. After receiving court clearance in another two weeks, he promised to issue GO the next day. “Since he gave us his word on this matter, we have decided to wait for a week,” Srikanth said after the meeting. Osmania University Alumni Association President Pawan Kalyan, Vice President Ravinder, General Secretary Narasimha and members of the Osmania Alumni Association were also present.
Last week, when the governor responded to a post on social media that reminded the state government of the need for a new building, Harish Rao responded by saying that the governor had chosen to overlook the government’s achievements in the medical sector. On Monday, the governor visited the hospital wards and inquired of patients, doctors and medical staff about treatment and hospital conditions.
The governor again raised her concerns about the limited space and quality of the facilities which she had raised with the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Health on multiple occasions. According to a statement by Raj Bhavan, the first meeting of the governor upon taking office in 2019 was with a delegation of Osmania General Hospital Since then, regular appeals have been made to the government on improving hospital infrastructure and treatment facilities.
During her visit, the governor noticed the postoperative ward and the general ward and described both as being in poor condition. It specifically mentioned the unsanitary conditions of the toilets, the old building roof and inadequate ventilation. She explained that her intention was not to engage in a blame game, but instead to ensure that poor and needy patients had access to the best possible treatment facilities.
