An officer at Baseerat Police Station named the deceased as Paritosh Mondal, adding that no one has been arrested so far.

One person was killed and another seriously injured in an explosion that was said to have occurred during the manufacture of improvised explosive devices in a rural West Bengal district destined for polling stations, police said Monday.

The accident occurred in Shalipur village, Harowa district, North 24 Parganas district, late Sunday night.

An officer at Baseerat police station said the dead man was Paritosh Mondal, adding that no one has been arrested so far.

The two injured were rushed to Al-Basirat Sub-Hospital, where one of them was declared dead. “We are investigating the explosion,” he told the agency by telephone.

The seriously injured person is being shifted to a hospital in Kolkata for better treatment.

Violence was reported in several parts of the state ahead of the 8 July elections in the panchayat, which resulted in the loss of several lives.
