London: Rishi altarthe first Indian-born British prime minister, spoke about the “sting” of racism he suffered growing up in the UK during a special appearance at the England vs. Australia Ashes Test match at Lord’s Cricket Ground in London.
The 43-year-old cricket lover has been interviewed before BBC On the fourth day of the Second Ashes Test on Saturday when asked about a recent independent report that found racism, sexism, elitism and class prejudice at all levels of cricket “widespread and entrenched”, and led to an outright apology by the England and Wales Cricket Board.
“I didn’t experience that in cricket, but of course I suffered from racism growing up,” Sunak said in response to a question. “It bothers you in a way that very few other things do. I’m in a job where I receive criticism on a daily basis, hourly, minute by minute. But racism, it hurts you, it hurts,” he said.
Sunak said Independent Property Rights Authority On Cricket Report was “difficult to read” and “really sad” for cricket fans. “Everyone who loves this game we want it to be inclusive and open and accessible to absolutely everyone, to welcome people from all backgrounds and to be a place where everyone can feel respected and supported,” Sunak said.
He went on to say that he was “confident” that the ECB was responding to its conclusions in the right way.
