He said that the congressmen who oppose the Congress Union Council should read the debate of the Constituent Assembly
The idea that the UCC will be against minorities is nonsense, said Mahesh Jethmalani, leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party, in an exclusive conversation with CNN-News18.
I am a firm believer in the Uniform Civil Code. Even though we are a diverse country, said the Supreme Court’s chief counsel, all faiths must agree to a joint family procedure. “It is nonsense that it is against minorities. Congressmen who oppose the World Congress Council should read the Constituent Assembly debate.”
The Rajya Sabha member said UCC will make social life smoother.
He said, “The anti-minority slogan is repeated in every issue by political parties deprived of Muslim votes and out of power.”
On the whole, said Jethmalani, there was a consensus that UCC is a good thing. The only objection, he added, is that it should not be rushed into submission.
The Law Commission has so far received more than 19 lakh responses.
“We’re going to try to get UCC done before our term is up,” he said. “It was a good time soon after 1950 as the Constitution-makers said… So 75 years down the road, it’s time for us to take a step forward. In the end, you bring a side humanely to the family through the law.”
