A 17-year-old Dalit girl was found hanged from her home in Bareilly district on Sunday, nearly two years after she was kidnapped and raped by multiple people.

During the preliminary investigation, it was revealed that the victim had a fight with her mother on Saturday evening over a family issue. The girl was disturbed by this, so she went to her room and locked herself from the inside.

On Sunday morning, when the young man did not open the door despite several knocks, the family notified neighbors, who called the police. The door was open and the victim was found hanging with a scarf around her neck. However, no suicide note was found on the victim.

A senior police officer said, “After obtaining the information, a police team rushed to the site and unearthed the body. The body was sent for an autopsy which revealed that the death occurred due to hanging.”

Out of a total of six people booked for rape, the main accused remains behind bars. The other five defendants were released on bail. The officer added, “The accused belong to another community.” The family told police the girl had been suffering from depression since the 2021 incident.

According to the police, the girl went missing after she left home for some business in May 2021. When she did not return, her family started searching and came to know that she is in contact with a young man from another community.

The FIR was filed against the youth and others for kidnapping and provisions of the Protecting Children from Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO) and SC/ST Act. The police tracked down the girl a week later.
