After a day of tensions in the Rang Mahal Valley area of the city following a clash between two groups of different castes, the Vadodara police on Monday arrested 15 of the 18 accused of involvement in the riots, officials said. The defendants have been booked in a case related to Sunday night’s riots in the Old City area. Police added that the incident followed a small scuffle amidst a road rage incident.
An FIR was filed at Panegal Police Station against 18 people from a community for their alleged involvement in stone-throwing riots in Rang Mahal Valley area.
Yashpal Jaganya, Deputy Commissioner of Police for the Third District, said, “There was no accident or collision. Face to face, a car carrying minority passengers and a motorcycle driven by members of the other community. This led to a brawl, which escalated into a riot. We booked members of both communities into the FIR after getting to know them. Eight people were arrested on the spot. It was also impounded for damaging public property. “One of our crew members was slightly injured,” Gagania said.
Officials said that after people from one community — traveling in a car — got involved in a scuffle with motorcyclist youths from another in a narrow alley in the area, the mob came face to face and began hurling stones. .
While the police quickly got involved in the melee to contain the situation, the mob damaged a PCR (Police Control Room) van and assaulted a policeman on duty.
On Monday evening, the Panijit Police Station arrested 15 accused, namely Ronak Gaikwad (31 years old), Jigar Campbell (26 years old), Sunny Shersagar (25 years old), Dharpan Khanvelkar (22 years old), Ilyas Malik (32), Irfan Malik (34) and Asifaly Saeed. .
The accused were arrested under Indian Penal Code Sections 143 (unlawful assembly), 147 (riot), 149 (offence committed by unlawful assembly in the trial of a common thing), 332 (voluntary harm to a public servant), and 427 ( Mischief to cause harm) loss or damage of Rs. 50 or more), 323 (voluntarily causing harm), 186 (voluntarily obstructing a public official in the performance of his public functions) and relevant sections of the Damage to Public Property Act.
