For the first 64 games of 2022, Michael Brantley has been looking just as dominant as ever. Now 35, Brantley hit .288 with 5 home runs and 26 RBI, including a Grand Slam, before hitting IL with a shoulder discomfort on June 27, and did not return.

More than a year later, and Brantley still wasn’t fit for the Houston Astros. Even though he was re-signed to a one-year, $12 million contract, fans didn’t see him until this year.

This past April, Brantley was sent to Triple-A Sugarland for a rehab assignment, but he was having a hard time hitting. After going 6-for-24 in 9 games in the minors, Brantley was sent back to IL for a 60-day stretch on June 23, 2023. There is currently no open knowledge regarding a potential return date.

A former doubles team leader, Brantley was a longtime member of the Cleveland Indians before moving to Houston. Known for his outside speed, Brantley can also be counted on routinely passing around twenty sacks a season in his prime.

Could this be Michael Brantley?

Like many elite sprinters before him, Brantley seems to have been pushed to his limits. Years of shredding with some of the most amazing plays in recent MLB history have taken a toll on him.

With the Astros now four games behind the Texas Rangers in the AL West, the defending World Series champions need as much help as possible. Fortunately, the likes of their big guns know what they’re doing, because it’s anyone’s guess whether or not we might see outfielder Michael Brantley in the MLB again.
