Tensions escalated in Thopal district of Manipur Monday morning after one person was killed and several others injured including an Assam soldier in separate incidents.

In the first incident, security forces fired on a crowd in Wangpal district to prevent them from robbing an armory of the Indian 3rd Reserve Battalion, police said, adding that one person was killed and others injured.

Local sources claimed that the dead volunteer from the village was 27 years old.

According to the sources, a large number of people from various villages including Hirok, Wangjing, Wangpal, and Khangabuk went in search of weapons from the IRB battalion when the standoff broke out.

Additional columns of the Rapid Action Force and Assam Rifles were mustered to reinforce security in the area and forced their way through roadblocks at multiple locations to reinforce the IRB battalion. During this, one of the Assam Rifles soldiers was shot in the leg while one of their cars was being set on fire.

Enraged by the killing, the mob also set fire to a house belonging to IRB personnel.
Following the incident, the authorities shortened the period for easing the curfew from five in the morning to two thirty in the afternoon.
According to the sources, the situation is now under control and is being closely monitored.
