Jagmohan Meena said a preliminary investigation revealed that some family disputes could be the reason for the act.
Police said two minors were killed and another injured after their mother threw them into a well before attempting to end her life by committing suicide in a village in Ganjam district of Odisha.
On Monday, a police officer said that local residents rescued Rashmita Joda, 30, and her eldest daughter Gunjan, 9, from the well, while Alisha and Asish, 5, were killed.
The accident happened in Lagoda village of the district late Sunday.
The officer said Jouda’s husband works as a laborer in Chennai, and he was not present at the time of the accident.
Gunjan and her mother are being treated at a community health centre.
Jagmohan Meena said that a preliminary investigation revealed that some family disputes may have been the cause of the act.
He added that further investigations are underway.
