Russian authorities have grounded flights at one of Moscow’s three main airports after it shot down what officials said were several Ukrainian drones.
The Ministry of Defense in Moscow said early Tuesday morning that air defenses destroyed four drones and another one was shot down using electronic countermeasures. It added in a Telegram statement that there were no injuries.
The wreckage of one of the drones caused a fire in a maintenance building, according to the state news service TASS. The attack was the most serious involving drones near Moscow since the end of May.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin wrote in Telegram that Vnukovo airport Work resumed at eight in the morning after being off for about three hours. Fourteen flights were diverted to other airports during that time.
Ukraine has denied involvement in the drone incidents which Russian officials continue to blame on the government in Kiev. In May, the Defense Ministry said it shot down eight drones trying to attack Moscow, prompting President Vladimir Putin to ask Russia to beef up its air defenses around the capital.
