As part of the rehabilitation of 23 families residing at the Sabarmati Ashram campus in Ahmedabad for the development of the Gandhi Ashram Memorial Project and the development of the area, the Ahmedabad Mosque Office has placed an order for the provision of a 3,400 sqm plot of land in the Fudge area to a 23-family housing cooperative.

Under the order dated June 5, the 23 families agreed to have the option of forming a co-operative society for their housing. The next step was to give the land to the co-operative community. The order indicates that the families had formed and registered the cooperative – Satyagraha Park Co-operative Housing Society – in January with the District Registrar, Co-operative Societies (Housing), in Ahmedabad.

Sources said that after allocating the land to the Satyagraha Park Co-operative Housing Society, the Pomoibogan ceremony for the plot for the construction of houses for 23 families is likely to take place soon.

As per the order, the cooperative was provided with land in Vadag district, which was obtained from the Shri Sabarmati Ashram Goshala Trust in lieu of the land given to the latter in Malarpur village in Kheda district. An order was issued to allocate a plot of land of 3,400 square meters to the cooperative after obtaining the approval of the Revenue Department under various conditions.

Some of the conditions under which the land was awarded include the use of the plots for residential purposes only. The families are required to complete the construction within three years. They will not get permission to sell it.

A senior government official close to the project said, “The plot of land has been allocated to the co-operative society. The approval of the Revenue Department in this regard is a mere formality. After the rehabilitation of these 23 families, it now remains to rehabilitate 14 of the approximately 290 families living in the Ashram campus.” “. The state government has given various options to the families residing in the Sabarmati Ashram’s residential properties.

Most of the residential properties are in the possession of the descendants of those settled in the ashram by Mahatma Gandhi in the early 20th century. For the implementation of the Gandhi Ashram Memorial and Precinct Development Project worth about Rs 1,200 crore, the Gujarat government has set up a Governing Council and an Executive Council. The board is chaired by Prime Minister Bhupendra Patel.

The project is being jointly implemented by the center and the state government.
