After failing to secure qualification for the 2023 FIFA World Cup, Ireland captain Andrew Balbernie has resigned from the captaincy duties on Tuesday 4 July. during the group phases.

Andrew Balbernie took charge of Ireland’s disappointing run in the tournament and waived his ODI and T20I captaincy with immediate effect. In a media statement by Cricket Ireland, Balberni explained the rationale behind his decision, saying:
“After much consideration and consideration, I have made the decision to step down as captain of the ODI and T20I team. It has been one of the most prestigious honors to lead this team over the past few years and I am incredibly grateful for all the support I have had on and off the field from the many players and coaches.”
On his future aspirations, Andrew Balberni continued:
“I feel like this is the right time for me, but more importantly the team. I will continue to give my best for this team and work hard to contribute to what I hope will be a successful period over the years to come.”
Balberni began his captaincy in 2019 and has gone on to lead his country in 89 appearances across various formats.

Irish coach Heinrich Malan also spoke about Balberni’s decision and revealed he respected the call. Malan opened up about the former Irish captain’s devotion to the job during his tenure and stated that he enjoyed working with him.
