Punjab Education Minister Harjot Singh Baines said on Tuesday that state history should be part of the national curriculum. “The history of Punjab is full of stories of teachers, saints and freedom fighters and its culture is very rich,” Baines said, during the online meeting of the 58th General Council of the National Education and Research Council.

Baines appealed to the Annapurna Devi Education Federation Ministry of Education that the history of Punjab should be part of the country’s school curriculum so that students can develop a true devotion to the country. Baines added that Punjab was a leading state of the country in every field and had bravely resisted many attacks that were targeting the country.

He said that the history of Punjab holds a pivotal place in the general history of the country and it was very important to teach this to the students of the nation.

Baines raised the issue of establishing a provincial educational institute for Punjab. He said the center gave its approval in 2017 to establish a provincial educational institute for Punjab. Based on this, the Government of Punjab has also identified the required land in Rupnagar district for the construction of a campus for the institute.

Baines said the land selected was close to Chandigarh Airport with great road connectivity but the center rejected the proposal on technical grounds and the matter was later closed.

Stressing the need to set up a regional educational institution in Punjab, he said that there was no national level institution for school education and training of school teachers in the state.

He assured the union minister that the Punjab government was committed to providing suitable land for this institute with easy access to the airport and good road connectivity.

He also raised the issue of royalty charged by NCERT in the name of right to copy books and demanded that they be waived so that the Punjab School Board of Education could use them to improve school education in the state.
