The US envoy said she hopes to work with her partners and allies around the world, including India, to support freedom and democracies.
US Ambassador to Kiev Bridget A. Brink said on Wednesday that India, with its increased global visibility and current presidency of the G-20, can make a significant contribution to ending the war in Ukraine.
In a special online briefing for a small group of Indian correspondents, Brink said India’s leadership is crucial in addressing various global challenges, and New Delhi’s growing concern about the negative impact of war on the global south is laying the groundwork for its role in defusing the crisis. .
She said the United States hopes to work with its partners and allies around the world, including India, to support freedom and democracies, and the ability of nations to choose their own future.
“From Kiev, I see every day the devastating effects of the war and the strength and resilience of the Ukrainian people,” Brink said.
The ambassador said that India’s aspirations for global leadership and its calls for collective action through the G20 slogan “One Earth, One Family, One Future” reflect the spirit required to achieve “peace”.
She said the war had wide-ranging ramifications for the global economy, food security and the fundamental principles enshrined in the United Nations Charter on sovereignty and territorial integrity.
“As this year’s G20 Chair, your country’s leadership is critical to shaping global events, including in places like Ukraine,” Brink noted.
India has not yet condemned the Russian invasion of Ukraine. She has been pressing for a resolution to the conflict through dialogue and diplomacy.
In a bilateral meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin on September 16 last year in the Uzbek city of Samarkand, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that “today’s age is not war” and urged the Russian leader to end the conflict.
We agree, as Prime Minister Modi said, that now is not the time for war. Ukraine has paid a heavy price to defend its freedom and independence. The loss of life and human suffering here is tragic, Brink said, and the effects of this war extend far beyond Ukraine’s borders.
She said that every democratic country has an interest in defending the principles of the United Nations Charter.
“I know that the people of India understand the importance of sovereign freedom and territorial integrity, and India’s leaders have spoken about these basic principles,” Brink said.
She added, “As the war in Ukraine plays out in Europe, the global effects of the war should inspire leaders everywhere to seek solutions to end it.”
Brink also commended India for its efforts to uphold the global order based on democracy and the rule of law.
“We are grateful for India’s partnership through the G20 and the Quartet, and on the global stage through its relentless leadership in promoting multilateral cooperation and upholding the world order based on democracy and the rule of law,” she said.
“India helps ensure that our citizens and democracies around the world are free to thrive in peace,” the envoy added.
The US ambassador to Ukraine said that India’s leaders have a unique voice to advocate for developing countries and encourage the continuation and expansion of the Black Sea Grain Initiative to ensure that people around the world have access to the food they desperately need.
The Ambassador also referred to how India is working to support developing countries or the Global South through its G20 Presidency.
