Fans have responded to England’s three substitutions for the third Ashes Test at Headingley in Leeds from Thursday, 6 July. The England Cricket Board (ECB) on Wednesday confirmed the must-win XI Test play.

Moeen Ali, who had been suffering from a sore finger during the First Test at Birmingham, returned to the XI. England’s bowlers Mark Wood and Chris Woakes were called up to the squad.

Vice-captain Olly Pope was ruled out of the remaining Ashes after dislocating his shoulder in the Lord’s Game, while James Anderson and Josh Tong were rested for the Third Test.

Anderson struggled to add weight to the ball in his first two matches. The England talisman has returned with three scalps at 75.33 in the series so far. During his Ashes debut at Lord’s, Tongue picked up five wickets in both innings. The Worcestershire pacer was killer with short balls while bowling alongside the large Stuart Broad.

Twitteratis welcomed Wood as Anderson’s replacement, but expressed disappointment that Tongue had left. Here are some reactions:

Interestingly, England is dropping their tongue. The Australians found it a challenge at Lourdes. Anderson is no surprise. Hood to see a particular return.

Josh Tong is very unlucky as the tail is so long to test the Ashes, Woakes and Moeen will add strength to depth in this section. But to win a Test, you need to take 20 wickets 🤔 twitter.com/englandcricket…

@employee How Crawley maintains his awful opening batsman is not good enough and drops his tongue after the best bowler has one last game

@employee @employee Josh Tong is stiff, he thinks he’s playing nice with old blight. It sounded second best after Broad

England were bold enough to drop Anderson. He seemed the least threatening. Mark Wood will make the English attack better. I don’t understand why Josh Tong was dropped though? He was very good at Lourdes. England are now battling all the way to No. 11 with Woakes back. # Ash

MustafaHosny Oh God, Amen Why did they drop it? I can see why Wood is for Anderson but not Woakes for Tongue.

England are under pressure to keep the Ashes alive

England lost both matches though the fight was on until the end. They missed two wickets at Birmingham, when Australia needed 54 runs to win. Ben Stokes’ breathtaking knock (155 off 214 balls) went to no avail as England were eventually bowled out for 327 chasing 371 at Lord’s

The hosts need to win all three remaining games in the series to overturn a 2-0 deficit and win back the urn for the first time since 2015. Meanwhile, Australia are just one step away from winning their first Ashes series in England since 2001.

Yorkshire County Football Club has increased security at Headingley. This comes after Just stop the oil Protesters invaded the pitch on the first day, and home fans were outraged on the final day over the controversial dismissal of Jonny Bristow.
