Spanish professional golfer Sergio Garcia is set to miss his first Open Championship since his continuous participation in the event since 1997. He had a terrible outing in a qualifying event at West Lancashire Golf Club.
Garcia had a 6-under par 71 to finish sixth in the 36-hole competition. Only the top five qualify for the Grand Championship.
If the Spaniard had managed to qualify for the Open Championship, it would have been his 25th consecutive appearance at a major.
As reported by ESPN, Garcia said:
“I haven’t really missed many majors since turning pro in 1999, only one due to COVID and the PGA a couple of months ago and unfortunately I’m going to miss this one.”
he added:
“It’s a shame but it’s the game. I felt close, within reach, but that’s what it is. If you don’t come here, you won’t be disappointed you’re not even trying. I was trying and unfortunately it wasn’t good enough.”
Garcia has only won one major in his career – the Masters in 2017. He spent over 450 weeks in the OWGR Top Ten between 2000 and 2009.
Sergio Garcia has been a regular participant in The Open Championship since 1998. In 25 matches, he has come close to winning the tournament twice.
The Spaniard had 10 top-10 finishes in the event. He has twice finished runner-up, losing out to the Irish on both occasions. In 2007, he lost out to Padraj Harrington, while in 2014, he finished runner-up behind Rory McIlroy. He has missed the cut five times.
Sergio Garcia’s best Open Championship accomplishments (by year):
Garcia signed with the LIV Golf League. He is the captain of Fireballs GC, one of the 12 teams in the league, and led them to victory at the LIV Golf Invitational Bangkok.
Despite joining the league for its inaugural event, it has yet to taste individual victory on the Saudi-backed golf circuit. He ranks 16th in the player rankings this season.
