Heavy rains lasting more than three hours left several parts of Ludhiana city under water on Wednesday. From the old city areas of Chaura Bazaar to the railway station to upscale areas including BRS Nagar, Ferozepur Road and Chandigarh Road, severe waterlogging cases have been seen and vehicles have been seen wading through water.
Although the industrial city was among the first batch of cities selected under the hub’s smart city mission launched in 2015, the Ludhiana Municipal Corporation has failed to find a solution to the waterlogging problem that plagues residents every monsoon season.
There have been reports of a road collapse in Janta Nagar, a temporary iron shed falling in Kot Mangal district and disrupting traffic in several areas as the roads filled with water. Even newly constructed tunnel tunnels such as Lodhi Club Tunnel and Sidhwan Canal Tunnel near Virca Milk Factory were flooded and traffic came to a temporary halt.
At least four people sustained minor injuries and were immediately rescued after the iron shed collapsed in Kot Mangal. More than one foot of water entered the State Railway Police Station near the railway station. Sub-Inspector Jatinder Singh, Police Station Officer, said the premises of the police station were flooded after continuous heavy rains and even the staff quarters were flooded.
Kapil Arora, Chairman of the Council of Engineers said that such was the extent of waterlogging in the BRS Nagar area that he saw two children trying to swim on a flooded road.
Shops and other commercial establishments in the Chora Bazar area were also flooded by rain, and shopkeepers said it would take at least one day for the water to recede. Other areas like Shivala Road, Madhopuri, Sat Paul Mittal road, Janakpuri, Haibowal, Chander Nagar, Janta Nagar, Kundanpuri and Chand Cinema Road, among others, also witnessed heavy waterlogging.
In another incident, a factory worker was killed and three others injured after a shed fell in the Dahlon area. Sub-Inspector Daljeet Singh of Dehlon Police Station said the shed at Pooja Industries collapsed after heavy rains and thunderstorms. “A factory worker, Surender Kumar, died and three others were injured,” the deputy inspector said.
